Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to contest certain calls made by the official, echoing the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
