In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
