Right-leaning reactions to the limited disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the censorship procedure.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise serious questions about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for greater transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet a few do not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative voices to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these files for an extended period only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to enact a bill mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy binders of files that contained little new information.
