EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
