A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
